The railway station of Hinterzarten is located east of Freiburg on the line "Höllentalbahn" from Freiburg to Donaueschingen. With 885 meters above sea level, it is the highest station on the line; not far from the station there is the highest inclination (57,14 ‰) of any main railway line in Germany.
The line opened in 1887 from Freiburg to Neustadt and was extended in 1901 to Donaueschingen. In 1936 the western part was electrified.
Today Hinterzarten is served by two trains every hour to Freiburg and Titisee.
