The sign and the name of the pub are inspired by the arrival of the Midland Railway, and a nearby station in 1876.
According to the pub's web site the pub was originally called the Hare and Hounds and changed its name when the railway arrived.

The pub has recently been refurbished and interestingly if you look closely at the picture of the pub on the web site you can see that the pub sign used to be coloured. It's hard to tell, but it looks like it was a photograph of a modern, probably diesel locomotive.
Since the refurbishment the wall above the entrance also has the legend Circa 1870, presumambly indicating when it's believed that the Hare and Hounds originally opened.
