Old Main was the first building of the state university system, the University of Colorado and Boulder just happened to be the first.

A plaque located at Old Main at the University of Colorado, Boulder campus. The plaque says, "In Commemoration of the generosity of the citizens of Boulder who in 1874 met the challenge of a territorial legislature by raising the necessary funds to assure the first building f the University of Colorado."
