Born in Prince Edward Island, Dr. John MacLean went west in 1893, eventually landing in Greenwood where he set up a medical practice. He went into politics as a Liberal, being elected to the BC Legislature in 1916 and became Premier of BC in 1927 on the death of John Oliver, then Premier. It was a time of decline for the Liberals, a trend which MacLean could not reverse and he was voted out of office in 1928, exactly one year after having taken the reins.
