16th United States Infantry, has this one monument on the Chickamauga Battlefield. The regiment took part in some of the hardest-fought battles of the war, including Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Wilderness, and Petersburg. They took significant losses during Gettysburg from a position between the Wheatfield and Devil's Den. Two battalions took part in the battle of Stones River under Maj. Adam J. Slemmer. (also Chickamauga) Following the Civil War the 16th took part in the reconstruction of the south and then performed duty on the frontier-the Indian Wars.

Short Significance Description:

The marker contributes to the national significance of the park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description

6' x 3' x 9', monument consists of rock-faced base and round-topped relief slab. Relief is of infantryman kneeling behind log breastwork in firing position with forest in background. Unit name inscribed below relief.
