The D-Day Invasion of World War II in June 1944 took place on 5 beaches in Normandy, including activity at Lion-sur-Mer, which is on Sword Beach. Sword Beach was a code name used by the Allied forces for the conflict called Operation Neptune, the early assault phase of Operation Overlord (the overall title for the invasion on Normandy).
A prominent feature of this World War II memorial is a tank labeled "Churchill AVRE", displayed at a road junction on Sword Beach, where the D-Day invasion occurred in June 1944. There is also a large monumnet in the form of a sundial, with one of the plaques commemorating the 41 Royal Marines Commandos and includes the names of those who lost their lives in the battle.
