In York, at a corner near the Strand Theatre, is this sculpture called, 'The Tinker,' featuring the Tin Woodman character from Frank Baum's Land of Oz children's books and associated works made from these books - including, 'The Wizard of Oz.'

The sculpture is located at a very busy street intersection, right in the sidewalk. It is a bronze and iron installation. The base are an industrial gear and wheel. The Tin woodman sits at the top of the base, in a position meant to mimic the position of the figure in "The Thinker." This figure has a man with a funnel for a head and a body with plenty of rivets. The face is in a serious expression.

The hub of the gear states that the name of the sculpture, Lorann Jacobs fabricated the bronze portion, and Peter Sells created the iron portion.

The figure, the Tin Woodman, is a well known character in L. Frank Baum's children's books about the Land of Oz. He appears in several of the books, but is best known as being one of the companions with Dorothy Gale, in 'The Wonderful World of Oz.' He appears in adaptions to the books, including the MGM 'super film,' "The Wizard of Oz.' The story is well known - though there are some differences between the book and the movie. He is also referred in the book as Nick Chopper. People also call him the Tin Woodsman, though this is not correct.
