35th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment, has this one monument and two other markers on the Chickamauga Battlefield. The 35th Regiment Indiana Infantry was organized on December 11, 1861 during the American Civil War, and mustered out October 23, 1865. It was known as the First Irish as it was mainly made up Irish Americans.

THIRTY-FIFTH REGIMENT INFANTRY.
MAJOR JOHN P. DUFFICY, COMMANDING.
THIRD BRIGADE (BARNES).
THIRD DIVISION (VANCLEVE).
TWENTY-FIRST CORPS (CRITTENDEN).

September 19th, this regiment went into action east of the LaFayette Road, south of Viniard's, facing northeast, at 3 p.m., fighting desperately until dark.
September 20th, moved to the left and after frequent moves and considerable fighting, including one successful charge led by Colonel Barnes, it reached this position where it resisted several determined assaults of the enemy. About sunset it withdrew under fire to the woods west of the LaFayette Road, and thence to Rossville.

Short Physical Description

9'10" x 5'10" x 9'10" high, this rock-faced monument has a stepped base. Rock-faced shaft is set off by bands of carved stars and incorporates state seal and bronze inscription plaque. Top is pyramidal.
