The film looks at the life and work of William Fries-Green. The film starts and ends with Friese Greene attending a film conference in London. At the start of the film Friese Greene tries to interest the audience in his pioneering work. Unfortunately the audience is mainly business men, and he does not get to speak. The middle of the film is about Friese Greene remembering his life, and the end of the film sees Friese Greene trying again to address the audience, but dying in the process.
William Greene started his working career as a photographic assistant to Maurice Guttenberg. Guttenberg doesn’t like the way Greene composes his portraits. Greene leaves Guttenberg and starts up a photography business of his own, under the name Friese Greene. He prospers in business, but becomes distracted in developing moving pictures and colour films. Eventually his distractions cause him to go bankrupt. He later goes into partnership with a businessman, but the relationship sours and he goes bankrupt again. He perseveres with his work and manages to produce a moving picture in Hyde Park. He takes the result to the conference where he dies.
