Captain Jack's Stronghold is the highlight of many visitors' trips to this National Monument. This location is where the the majority of the Modoc War of 1872-3 centered around and where the last battles of the war were fought.
There is a map located at the entrance to a self-guided loop trail that contains either a smaller loop to quickly take in the rich history here or a much longer loop trail to get the full effect of the scenery and expanse of the fortresses that the Modocs hid themselves in during the war.
