SCHONCHIN BUTTE (L), 70.1 m. (5,293 alt.), is the largest of the 11 cones of scoriaceous cinder in the southern part of the monument; it was named for a Modoc chief.

Today, Schonchin Butte is home to a fire lookout and visitors are welcomed to some spectacular views of the surrounding terrain within the Lava Beds National Monument. This fire lookout was constructed by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps from Camp Tulelake from 1939-1941.
