On the south end of the historic Perot Post Office, a bronze plaque commemoration the issuing of the first Bermuda postage stamp is inscribed:

FROM THIS HOUSE
THE FIRST
BERMUDA
POSTAGE
STAMP
WAS ISSUED IN THE YEAR 1848
BY WILLIAM B. PEROT
POSTMASTER OF HAMILTON

Perot's Post Office is named after Bermuda's first Postmaster General William B. Perot. He would deliver mail to incoming ships. In 1848 he began to produce his own postage stamps. Today these stamps are quite rare and valuable. Only 11 copies are known to exist today. The newest 2014 Scott catalog prices them at $135,000. A copy 1848 stamp is on display inside the post office. They also have some of the later 1853 varieties.
