Remains of Amarillo Air Force Base - The base once boasted eight of these unique giant water towers. Only two remain today. Worth viewing on Bing & Google to see the differences.

In its earliest days, Route 66 passed right by Amarillo's old English Field Airport, and later through the Amarillo Air Force Base. Now, this old segment of 66 is blocked by one of the longest runways in the country at what is now known as Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport.

Access to the base & airport is restricted, the two giant water towers are the only ground photos you can get from the highway of the old Air Force base. Located East of Amarillo on the old US-40, & can easily be seen as you pass, If you wish you wish to stop you need to be on Route 66.

an Interesting point, the railway track appears to pass under the massive water tanks. The old, mostly derelict Air Force base, is featured on virtual globetrotting: (visit link)

If you view the giant water towers on Bing the shadow defines the shape of the two unique towers: (visit link)
