Tucked away in a newer residential area is the John Mathews Pioneer Cemetery. A nearby geocache brought me to this cemetery. This cemetery is very small, only the size of a residential lot and contains very few graves. The majority of the headstones have been replaced with newer, granite headstones. Unfortunately, whoever did the engraving of the names on these newer headstones didn't etch them deep enough and the names and dates are very difficult to decipher. There are a handful of original headstones here as well as a couple of military headstones of members of Oregon's 1st Infantry. One unusual headstone was of a man named 'Hall' who was killed by Indians, as it reads below his name.
