Nothing is known about J P Smith. There is a reference to a JP Smith in a publication on the Manchester Art Museum in 1880 and another reference to a JP Smith in 1843 in the West of England Art Union publication.
The door of the church is much as it would have been at the time of the painting. The trajectory of the path to the left is artistic licence. The now photograph is constrained by the growth of a tree near to where the artist would have sat. The painting is oil on canvas and in the collection of the Hertford Museum. It dates to 1899.
