From the 1880s-1950s, Raton was a major hub on the Santa Fe, and this depot reflects that status. With the decline of passenger rail and the change in the railroading industry, Raton declined as a hub but the depot remains in service hosting Amtrak passengers.
Today it is used by Amtrak trains, mostly bringing Boy Scouts to the Philmont Scout Ranch.
