Evacustes A Phipson was born Edward Arthur Phipson in 1854 in King’s Norton. He changed his first name to Evacustes, a greek word meaning easy listener. He emigrated to Australia, but returned in 1889 to earn his living as a painter. He produced many paintings of local scenes across Britain. He died in Rye in 1931.
The painting is a watercolour and is in the collection of Hitchin Museum and Art Gallery. The photograph of Bancroft was taken as two photographs, which have been added together, due to the large field of view in the original painting.
