The Stoppels spent the winter of 1856-57 in a cave dug out of the hillside. In 1857 they built a log cabin at the mouth of the cave and lived there until the house was built. In 1897 George Stoppel died and his wife, Marie and youngest son Frederick lived in the house until 1901. The farm was operated until 1955 by the Stoppel family. In 1976 the farmstead with was purchased by the Olmstead County Historical Society. The property was placed on the register in 1976 due to the maintained architectural quality and integrity.
