The Castle of Horst is a former water castle in Gelsenkirchen.
"This castle by the river Emscher is a renaissance monument like no other in the northwest of Germany.

It was built between 1555 and 1573 as a seat for the nobleman Rütger von der Horst and was very lavishly appointed. Despite continuous attempts to upkeep the building, it gradually fell into disrepair over the centuries. Inspired by celebrations to mark the 700th anniversary of the charter conferring Horst the status of a town, the Schloss Horst Development Association was founded in 1985, a community group that has since been a driving force in ensuring the castle was restored and used in line with its listed building status.

After the castle had been bought by the Gelsenkirchen city council in 1988 and intensive archaeological groundwork carried out, building work began in 1995 with the financial support of the regional government. On 13 August 1999 the castle reopened in all its former glory, and now serves as a cultural and community centre. It also contains a renaissance period museum full of exquisite items from the castle, including portraits of the original owners. The Glass Hall, the Knight's Lounge and the Hearth Room offer a pleasant ambience for concerts and other stylish events. In addition, Gelsenkirchen's main registry office, part of the cultural office, the development association and West Gelsenkirchen's district administration office are all based here. And down in the vaults, the restaurant invites you to dine in a quite singular atmosphere."
