The Dundas Historical Society Muesum was created back in 1955, the building of the museum was made necessary since the inventory had grown quite large since the Historical Society's inception in 1941.

The building itself was opened in April 1956 out of brick, concrete and steel meant to help prevent fires. The building is equipped with advanced heating and cooling systems to keep the artifacts at appropriate temperatures. In 1962 the Museum was incorporated as a charitable organization and the next year a second storage area and gallery were added.

In 1974 the heritage building was transferred to the building and moved to museum property.

The museum is part of the Ontario Museum Association.

Exhibits include the new Cradled in the Valley: Stories of Dundas, which opened on April 21, 2006, the museums 50th anniversary. There are over 12,000 artifacts and archives on site.

Finally the facility has a local gift shop which sells children's toys, post cards and local books. There is a Old-Time garden around the property which received the City of Hamilton's Award of Excellence for Ward 13 in 2010.

The museum is also in the process of creating a rent-able space for events and meetings.

Admission is based on donations.
