The Victorian house atop the former Penfield Manufacturing Company, makers of bedding and furniture, is best viewed from a block or two south on Salina Street. The building is mostly red, matching the factory, with white trim and a gabled roof. But what is it doing up there? Apparently it was a mystery for quite some time.
In fact the Victorian building is just a shelter protecting the mechanical equipment necessary to operate the freight elevator. The daughter of the builder said, in 1937, that her father, Harvey Moyer, built the structure as an architectural gimmick used to attract attention to the business. Penfield Manufacturing Co. operated on this site from 1895 to 1915.
