Jason Rafiel dies and leaves a bequest to Miss Marple. Miss Marple had been an acquaintance of Miss Marple, and he had nicknamed her his Nemesis. In the will she will inherit £20,000 providing her investigations are concluded to her satisfaction. What the investigations are to be is unspecified. However, she is given two tickets for a tour of stately homes.

She takes her nephew Lionel along with her. When the tour reaches Abbey Ducis Miss Marple is invited to stay with the Bradbury Scott sisters. Two of the sisters were guardians of Verity Hunt, the fiancée of Michael Rafiel, Jason Rafiel’s son. Michael was accused, but not convicted, of Verity’s murder. He has since been living rough. The subject of Miss Marple’s investigation now becomes clear.

There are several other people connected to Verity Hunt on the coach tour. One of them, Elizabeth Temple, is murdered by a falling statue whilst on the tour. Miss Marple also finds out that another girl, Nora Brent, went missing at the same time as Verity, and was last seen in Michael Rafiel’s car.

Miss Marple discovers that Verity was barely recognisable when found, and that Clothilde Bradbury Scott was the one that identified the body. Miss Marple works out that the body in Verity Hunt’s grave is Nora Brent. Nora was killed to cover up the accidental death of Verity. Verity had had an argument with Clothilde over her engagement to Michael Rafiel, tripped and fell in the garden. Clothilde buried her in the garden and killed Nora to incriminate Michael and to cover up Verity’s disappearance.
