Gordon Cloade died in a gas explosion. His widow Rosaleen and her brother, David Hunter survived the explosion. Before marrying Rosaleen Gordon had willed his money to the Cloade family, many of whom were counting on their inheritance.

Enoch Arden arrives in the village and attempts to blackmail David Hunter by saying he knows the whereabouts of Rosaleen’s first husband, Robert. He is later found in his hotel room murdered. Rowley Cloade appeals to Poirot to investigate whether Enoch Arden was actually Robert Underhay, Rosaleen’s first husband. Poirot finds a Major Porter, that knew Underhay in Africa. Porter confirms that Arden is in fact Underhay. Gordon Cloade’s estate reverts to the Cloade family.

Poirot now turns to investigating Underhay’s death. Rosaleen has a strong alibi, but David Hunter is seen to have enough time to have committed the act. Fortunately for Hunter, a witness comes forward saying they saw a woman in an orange headscarf leave Underhay’s room at the time the death occurred. Things get muddier when Poirot works out that Underhay hit his head on the mantelpiece in his room and was moved to make an accidental death look like murder.

Some time later Major Porter appears to commit suicide, without leaving a note. On investigation, Poirot finds out that Enoch Arden was not Robert Underhay, but Charles Trenton, second cousin to Frances Cloade. Major Porter had been bribed to take part in an attempt by the Cloade family to blackmail Rosaleen.

Rosaleen attempts suicide, but is saved in time. Poirot then summons the family into the library for his explanation of the events.

Rowley visited Arden and spotted the resemblance to Frances Cloade. In his anger he pushed Arden and he fell against the mantelpiece. Rowley made the accident look like murder to incriminate David Hunter. Rowley employed both Porter and Poirot to complete the deception. Porter did commit suicide, but Rowley destroyed the note. David discovered Arden’s body and returned later as the woman in the orange headscarf to establish his alibi.

The two death’s are solved, however Poirot has discovered more. The gas explosion at Gordon Cloade’s house was deliberate. Further, the real Rosaleen died in the explosion. The fake Rosaleen was a maid in Gordon’s house and is David’s lover. David Hunter planned this charade in order to inherit the Cloade fortune. The fake Rosaleen tried to kill herself out of guilt. The morphine was supplied by David, however.
