View from the Kollhoff Tower across Berlin to the TV Tower

There are two options to get a bird-eye-view of the German capital. Wait in line at the TV tower for an hour or two - or use one of the town's best kept secrets: Europe's fastest elevator at the Kollhoff-Tower at Potsdam Square.

The viewing platform on top of this high rise office building is only slighty lower than the observation deck at the TV tower, and while the platform at the TV tower is enclosed, this one is in open air - at 300 feet elevation.

The Kollhoff-Tower is one of three skyscrapers at Berlin's newest business center, the Potsdamer Platz (Potsdam Square).

Until the end of World War II, the Square was a thriving center of the German capital. In April 1945, it was leveled by allied bombings and Russian artillery. After the erection of the Berlin Wall, the square ended up i no-mans land, with the Wall literally going across it. Up until the 1990s, the square was just an empty place - one of the biggest scars of the divided city.

After reunification, it was decided to rebuild the square as a business center. Construction began in 1994, and since 1999, the Kollhoff-Tower, together with three other tall building, Sony Center, Bahn Tower and PwC Tower, defines the skyline at Potsdam Square.
