George Washington was in Popes Creek Plantation on February 22, 1732. Early in his life he was a surveyor before becoming an officer during the French and Indian Wars. he married Martha Custis on January 6, 1759.

After the start of the American Revolutionary War he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and and successfully defeated the British to gain independence for the American Colonies. Subsequently he was elected the first President of the United States. He served two four year terms before declining to run again. He died at his home in Mount Vernon, VA on December 14, 1799 at the age of 67.

A 32" by 24" by 13.5" plaster cast of a bust of George Washington rests on a 38.5" high by 13" round base. The sculpture was created by Hiram Powers copied after the sculpture by Jean Antoine Houdon which depicts Washing in classical robes. The statue was modeled in 1838 and cast ca. 1844.

The sculpture is enclosed in a clear case. A plaque on the front records its history. it is inscribed:
