A local farmer, Alex Preston, is found murdered and disembowelled on the Blood Stone in the Crowcall stone circle. At Preston,s house there are signs of a break in and there is blodd on a broken window pane. Mrs Preston is nowhere to be seen.

Alex Preston had annoyed local New Dawn druids by his intention to plough the fields around Crowcall stone circle. The druids have alibis at the time of the murder though. Mrs Preston eventually turns up. She had been having a fling with her fencing instructor, Aidan Hardy, at the time of the murder. Her husband knew of the affair and had cut his wife out of his will. Local policeman, Trevor Gibson, disputes her alibi, but CCTV eventually clears her.

The next to die is one of the druids, Leticia Clifford. She had been studying local ley lines and was stabbed to death. One of her maps had been removed. Suspicions are drawn to local poacher Evan Jago. Constable Gibson challenges Jago after the charity box is stolen from the pub. Jago goes on the run back to his cottage.

Barnaby eventually deduces that Constable Gibson seems to have something to say to explain all the events, and that his interpretations are flaky. Barnaby suspects Gibson is involved, but Jones robustly defends Gibson. It becomes academic when they find Gibson drowned in a water butt at the police station. In the police house is the missing map and some ancient artefacts.

Barnaby consults local historian Caradoc Singer about the artefacts and Crowcall circle. Singer makes the case that there was a battle fought locally in ancient times, but that it was two miles from Crowcall circle. Whilst at Singer’s house Barnaby notices a Picasso painting in the hall. Singer explains that it is a fake. Unfortunately for Singer, Jago steals the painting and tries to sell it at the market. He is arrested and Barnaby realises the painting is genuine. He raids Singer’s house and finds a cellar full of valuable paintings. Singer confesses that he killed Gibso. He and Gibson had been in league. Gibson did the murders, but was becoming a liability.
