Sir Michael Fielding, eminent musician, runs a competition for a place on his Master Class at Devington Manor. Three students are selected for the Master Class, Zoe Stock, Orlando Guest, and Francesca Sharpe. One of the runners up, Benedict Marsh, is particularly disgruntled and hangs around the Manor, living in an abandoned cottage.

Whilst on the Master Class Zoe encounters a woman with a baby. Zoe sees the woman leap into the river and drown. When police search the river no woman is found. Jones is dismissive, but Barnaby is not so sure, particularly as a woman was drowned there eighteen years earlier and Barnaby was on the investigation. Father Gregory originally found the body, he appears on the scene, just as he had eighteen years earlier.

When Barnaby and Jones talk to Father Gregory Jones notice that he mentions the baby, even though Barnaby and Jones hadn’t mentioned it. Further, as Barnaby and Zoe go outside the church some tiles come crashing down from the roof, narrowly missing the pair.

At the local pub Zoe notices a photograph of the drowned woman on the wall. She is identified as Mad Molly who lived in a cottage in the woods. Barnaby takes Zoe to the cottage and Zoe seems to remember things in the cottage. Later Barnaby finds that Benedict is hiding out at the cottage.

Back at the Manor, Orlando has arranged a tryst with Zoe at a hide in the woods. When Zoe arrives at the hide she finds Orlando hanged.

The next day Zoe’s parents are summoned to the church by Father Gregory. When they arrive at the church they find Father Gregory dead, with his throat cut. They leave the scene and are involved in a car crash. Their brakes had been cut. Barnaby finds that Father Gregory had had a DNA test done recently. Investigation shows that the samples were a lock of hair from Mad Molly’s locket and saliva from Zoe’s communion cup. Barnaby now knows that Father Gregory found Mad Molly’s baby and had it adopted. That baby was Zoe.

At the hospital Zoe’s father admit that they adopted Zoe. He further tells Barnaby that Zoe’s real father and grandfather is Sir Michael Fielding. Molly was Sir Michael’s daughter. Sir Michael is persuaded by a natural selection theory and wants to propagate his genius into the future. Barnaby manages to warn Zoe before Sir Michael tries to father a great grand child. Sir Michael and his two daughters had perpetrated the murders to get Zoe back into the family.
