Harriet Farmer was eloping with her boyfriend, Finn Robson, when they were attacked. She was left in a coma and Finn disappeared. A year later Harriet awakes from her coma, but cannot remember what happened. Her father, David, is organising the Bishopwood chess tournament this year. The chess club president, Edward Stannington, is very unpopular and is found murdered by a nearby lake. He is found with some chess notation on his body.

Shortly before his death Stannington had been in contact with a disgruntled ex employee of a computer chess firm, run by Alan Robson, Finn’s father, and a rival chess player to Stannington. Barnaby thinks there is a connection. Stannington was also the father of a young chess prodigy, Jamie Carr. Jamie’s mother admits to damaging Stannington’s car at the murder scene, but swears that he was alive at the time.

Another possible killer might have been Arthur Potts, a local hotelier hosting the chess championship. Potts had hoped that Stannington might invest in the hotel. Potts’s wife, Caroline, was expected to have dinner with David Farmer. The next day David Farmer is found dead with chess notation on his body. After an OAP is found dead Stannington’s Aunt Laura tells Barnaby that Caroline Potts does meals on wheels and that several OAPs have died after eating her meals. Jones investigates, but finds the OAPs all died of natural causes. However, Caroline tries to abduct Harriet and force her to remember what happened to Finn. Caroline had a crush on Finn.

Barnaby persuades Harriet’s doctor, Laura Parr, to take Harriet back to the woods to try to remember what happened to her. She does remember that they were attacked by Jamie Carr. Barnaby interviews Jamie and gets him to confess that he ambushed the couple. Jamie had a crush on Harriet and he hit Finn. Afterwards he panicked and tried to get help. He got help, but is sworn to secrecy over the identity. Barnaby sends Jones to Harriet’s hospital to protect Harriet. Whilst at the hospital Jones goes to the basement and finds Finn chained up. Laura Parr was the sister of Julian Parr, who was the genius behind Robson’s chess software. Julian committed suicide and Laura wants revenge on the Robsons. Barnaby uses his university psychology to persuade Laura not to kill Finn.
