The story starts with the burning of Selwyn Proctor’s classic car. Selwyn Proctor is a stock broker and his wife Tamsin is secretly a member of the local reading club, a front for a stock market investing club. The reading/investing club is chaired by Marjorie Empson and has members :- Sandra Bradshaw, the GP’s wife, Tamsin Proctor, Lady Lavinia Chetwood, and Ginny Sharp, a divorcee.

Soon after the fire, Marjory Empson is found battered to death by her own walking stick. Barnaby interviews all the ladies of the investment club, and their swimming pool maintenance man, Harry Painter. Barnaby recognises Painter, he has form for fraud. He played the stock market with client’s money and lost.

Barnaby finds that both Tamsin Proctor and Lady Lavinia wanted to cash in their profits from the club. Tamsin Proctor has been receiving letters in her swimming pool. Together they spell out the name Maureen. Tamsin used to be called Maureen and had a baby. She wants the money to leave her bullying husband and reclaim her baby. Lady Lavinia wants the money to repair the roof of Chetwood House.

Ginny Sharp has received a bath robe, from the Feathers Hotel, through the post. She had had an affair with Selwyn Proctor at the Feathers. Later she finds Feathers Hotel ash trays in her swimming pool. The next morning she is found dead in her swimming pool.

Selwyn Proctor meets Lady Lavinia and suggests buying Chetwood House. Lady Lavinia tells her husband, who later confides in Dr Bradshaw. Selwyn Proctor arranges for roofing experts to inspect the roof. Lady Lavinia waits for them on the roof, but falls to her death.

When Barnaby investigates he finds that the roofer’s appointment had been cancelled. Troy makes a discovery that reveals the murderer. Whilst Barnaby talks to Dr Bradshaw, Troy can hear their conversation on Sandra Bradshaw’s headset in reception. The intercom in the Doctor’s office has been permanently wired to the on position.

Obviously Sandra would know about Maureen, the roofers and all the other goings on in the village. Barnaby and Troy dash to Chetwood House to find Sandra trying to befriend a frightened Lord Chetwood. Sandra had become infatuated with Lord Chetwood and had killed everyone that had wronged him over the years
