Connie Bishop, a local teacher, keeps crying out that there are intruders in her house, much to the annoyance of her neighbours. One night when she hears intruders local councillor Jim Hanley is found dead in the garden. Councillor Hanley is on the planning committee and Connie is planning an extension. Councillor Hanley is also on the organising committee of the Frobisher Night, a charity fund raising auction, but has mysteriously recently resigned from the committee.

The Frobisher Night committee has been infiltrated by a local big wig, Zukie Richardson, who is intent on taking the Frobisher Night up market. Zukie is trying to oust locals from the committee. Her husband, Howard, is a retired electronics magnate.

Connie decides to change her locks and asks local handyman Laurence Mann to do the job. Mann is a womaniser and knows that local sculptor, Justin Cooper, has the hots for Connie. Mann rubbishes Justin to Connie and then produces a bottle of wine. Connie and Mann drink the wine and an inebriated Mann is ushered out of the house into the summer house. In the middle of the night Connie wakes up and goes out to the summer house where she finds Mann dead. Previously Mann had told Connie that he knew who had killed Jim Hanley.

Mrs Stroud comforts Connie and tells her that Justin loves her and that he is a nice guy, not what Mann had insinuated. Connie makes up with Justin and they have a meal together. Connie puts Justin up in her spare room. During the night Connie sleep walks into Justin’s room. Justin wakes her up and Connie starts to think that she might have committed the murders whilst she was asleep. She says she keeps hearing voices in the night telling her about the murders.

Barnaby doesn’t believe in murder by sleep walkers. He searches Connie’s house and finds a bug in her hifi. Not only does the bug listen, it also can play sounds from outside the house. During the Frobisher Night bash. Barnaby breaks into the Richardson house and finds a computer that controls sounds of creaking floorboards etc. Barnaby is rumbled however, when Howard Richardson accesses the computer webcam from his phone. Barnaby goes to the Frobisher Marquee and arrests Richardson.

Howard Richardson had been involved in spread betting, lost, and wanted to close the local school, which he had funded in the good times, and sell it. Jim Hanley wanted to use the Frobisher funds to keep the school open. Richardson killed Hanley so he could close the school. Mann found out and had to be silenced. Spooking Connie was an attempt to drive the teacher out of the school.
