At a Spanish evening, organised by the residents committee, Fiona Thompson has a row with her husband and walks home. She is later found stabbed to death, with a rose in her mouth, in Chaney’s Field. Nobody saw the murder but a squeaking sound was heard.

Fiona was a member of the resident’s association, but not a popular one. The resident’s association is full of fratching. The Spearman’s, neighbours of the Thompsons, left the association after a row. The chairman of the association is retired GP, Charles Rust. Rust has won the garden competition for three years and will not cancel this years contest because of the murder. He wants to win again and the contest goes ahead. Unfortunately, after the judges have been round, Rust is found in his study stabbed to death and with an apple in his mouth.

Barnaby has just been joined by DS Scott, up from London. Cully helps him find a flat. She is back at home and organising a tenth year reunion for four of her school friends. She visits three of the friends, Cassie and Noel Woods, farmers, and Lynn Spearman, married to Matthew Spearman. Her fourth friend, Rachael Rose now has a child and is very reclusive. Cully buys a doll for the child, but doesn’t get Rachael to answer the door. She eventually meets up with the four when she is invited to a picnic by the lake. Whilst there they go for a swim and the other four nearly drown Culley. The message is clear that five is a crowd.

Later, the local handyman, Jacob Stoke, is found dead and on fire on his cart. Next to him is the burnt remain of the doll Culley bought. Barnaby visits Rachael and realises that the child isn’t Rachael’s. Apparently Rachael disappeared before the birth of the child, and at the same time Lynn Spearman went to New Zealand. Barnaby guesses that the child is Lynn Spearman’s and that the father is Noel Woods.

Not knowing of her father’s progress Culley goes to see Rachael at night. Rachael shows her the door and outside Lynn Spearman tries to kill her. Rachael comes to her assistance. When arrested Spearman confesses. The murders were to do with the child. Fiona Thompson was the GP’s receptionist, the GP being Charles Rust. They were killed to keep them quiet about the child. Stoke was killed because he was a witness. The strange noise everyone heard was the child’s pram. The reclusive Rachael took the child out at night in its squeaky push chair, in order not to be seen.
