Le site des trois bornes est l'unique endroit où se côtoient trois départements de Lorraine (les Vosges, la Meuse et la Meurthe-et-Moselle), ce qui correspond à un tripoint. Le site est matérialisé par trois bornes, une pour chaque département.Les communes frontalières sont (par ordre décroissant de la taille des bornes) :
Mont-l'Étroit (Meurthe-et-Moselle) à l'est,
Clérey-la-Côte (Vosges) au sud,
Sauvigny (Meuse) à l'ouest.
Elles se situent au sommet de la colline de Clérey-la-Côte qui fait partie des Côtes de Meuse, dans la forêt, à plus de 400 mètres d'altitude.
