According to the 1900 US Census (Gunnison County, Precinct 18, District 0139), Clayton was a foreman of a pack train who was a boarder living with George W. Potter. He was born in New York. In 1910 (per the US Census) he is still living in Gunnison, Precinct 24, with his wife Jennie and three children. He is a quartz miner.
