With a height of 1008 m the Donon is the second highest mountain in the Northern Vosges.

The current temple at the summit was in the neoclassical style of Napoleon III. built and is a free reconstruction. On the plateau of the Donon are the remains of the Celtic and Roman cult installations that were dedicated to the god Vosegus. The archaeological original discoveries are in museums in Epinal and Strasbourg (Musée Archaeological de Strasbourg). The mountain lost its cultic significance with the Christianization of the country.

In recent wars the Donon was hotly debated because of its exposed position. As a result of the 1870-71 war drew the German-French border close up to the mountain. During World War I he was occupied until 1918 by German troops, who built numerous fortifications. In the war of 1940, the 43rd attachment Corps of the French Army was encircled on the Donon and surrendered only after the armistice. Many soldiers' graves in the area of the summit still bear witness to the heavy fighting.
