ABOUT THE STATUE:

The life-size equestrian statue of Field Marshal Josef Wenzel Radetzky depicts him riding toward victory, with his right hand raised parallel to the ground and pointing forward. He is in military dress, including a large helmet. In his left hand, he appears to be holding a riding crop. The bronze statue was created by German sculptor Kaspar von Zumbusch and was dedicated in front of the Court's War Council building in 1892. It was moved to its current location in 1913 in front of the War Ministry Headquarters on Ringstrasse. The plinth is made of stone and has bronze relief panels on it.

ABOUT THE MAN:

"Johann Josef (Joseph) Wenzel (Anton Franz Karl) Graf Radetzky von Radetz (English: John Joseph Wenceslaus Anthony Francis Charles, Count Radetzky of Radetz, Czech: Jan Josef Václav Antonín František Karel hrabe Radecký z Radce) (2 November 1766 – 5 January 1858) was a Czech nobleman and Austrian general, immortalised by Johann Strauss I's Radetzky March. General Radetzky was in the military for over 70 years to the age of 90, almost up to his death at age 91, and is known for the victories at the Battles of Custoza (24–25 July 1848) and Novara (23 March 1849) during the First Italian War of Independence."
