In the mid-1700's, this woodframe structure served as Dover's first post office (source below). It is the oldest still-standing wood structure in Dover. Despite being sometimes known as the "John Bell House," the building actually is believed to have served as a workshop for much of it's early history. The exact date of construction is uncertain. In the attic, restoration workers found the date 1743 punched with an awl into a section of wooden stud, but it is thought that the actual construction date may be even earlier. The building was owned by several generations of the Bell family; today, it is owned by the state and serves as a starting point for historic tours.
"5. NO. 49 THE GREEN (private), a one-and-one-half story frame office building covered with clapboards split by hand, is reckoned one of the city's earliest buildings, the precise date of erection unknown. It has served as Dover's first postoffice, as shop, and as law offices of Nathaniel B. Smithers and George V. Massey—in their time, leading attorneys of Dover."-Delaware: A Guide to the First State, 1938

Visit Instructions: To post a log to an existing U.S. Post Office waymark, you will need to post a picture of the front of the building, with the name of the post office in the background if that is possible. A description of your Post Office is required, such as when it was built, history, outstanding or unique features, population of the city or town, just do a quick internet search and find an interesting bit of information about the city or town and add it to the long description, to make it more interesting. Even just adding in the population of the area can give others an idea of how many people this post office serves. This description should be at least three sentences.
If your Post Office has any unusual or unique features that you feel others would enjoy viewing, additional pictures are always welcome. Including your gps device in the picture is not necessary, but wouldn't be cause for disapproval, as long as all other details of your log are acceptable.
