Some folks erroneously call the place "Xochimilco's," but it IS acceptable to shorten it to "Xochi's." Just don't confuse that with the nearby gift shop of the same name.

Be aware that this one is on the west side of I-96, and the ever-mutating nature of the roads around the Ambassador Bridge to Canada can make getting to 23rd and Bagley into a field trip. Gone are the days of exiting at Porter Street: Take Vernor Highway, regardless of whether you're coming from the north or the south. They're right across the street from El Zócalo, which you can visit the next time you're down here.

There really is authentic Mexican food in the Detroit area, and Mexican Town has plenty of restaurants to visit. Xochimilco has quite a bit of space, as the upstairs is about the same size as the downstairs, but it can get busy here during peak times, so you'll see folks waiting outside on the patio. You can feel free to go upstairs to the full bar and get something to drink while you wait.

Seating can be a little cramped, and as the day turns into night, some areas of the restaurant aren't well-lit. You can still read the menu, you can still play with your phone, but you're probably not going to play solitaire at the table.

Be careful of those warm chips they'll bring to your table, and pay attention when they tell you that the salsa with the spoon in it is the hot one. It's not too terribly hot for folks who are really into spicy foot, but it does have a nice kick to it that will take folks by surprise if they're expecting something along the lines of Pace salsa.

They've got the real deal here, with a few nods to the gringos like chimichangas or burritos. There's menudo, caldo de res, guisados, tacos, tamales, flautas, quesadillas, enchiladas, steaks, and tostadas. They're child-friendly, and atmosphere is very casual

They are known for their botanas, which are large enough to feed an entire table, and the super nachos are pretty hefty, too. If you still have room after all that food, they can take care of you with dessert.

Note that the restaurant itself has no online presence: The listed URL is a fan page.
