The Maid of the Mist boat ride offers a unique experience. You start on top of the observation tower above the Niagara Escarpment and take the elevator down the Niagara River. You are given disposable rain ponchos before you board the 600 person capacity boat.
The boat passes close to the American Falls on it's way upstream to the much larger Canadian Falls. Now you appreciate the beauty and power of the falls as well as having protective rain gear. When you get to the Horseshoe Falls the boat remains running but stationary against the current. This is where the experience is most dramatic as a torrent of water falls a few feet away from the boat.
The boat then begins a turn along the curve of the falls and starts back, passing by the American Falls before returning to the dock. Total time is about 20 minutes.
