Cave Rock was sacred ground to the Washoe Indians long before the white men appeared. It attracted rock climbers but that was controversial. It is volcanic rock.

In 1931 the State bored a two lane highway through it. It was a climbing rock until a legal decision (which took many years) put it in the hands of the U S Forest Service as a cultural landmark.
Much land along the shores of Lake Tahoe is part of the Tahoe Nevada State Park unit.
As population increased a second parallel, two lane tunnel was constructed about 1958. Today there is a light that must be used whenever bicycles are in the tunnel.
Cave Rock is a day use State Park with a small boat launch facility.
This year many rocks could be seen above the water!
