Good parking for snowshoeing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling.
And most important, just building a snowman or finding a potty.

There are many forest service leased cabins/ homes in the area. The diehards like to come in for the long Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's weekends. Sometimes later, like Valentines, and even Easter. The homeowners have an association that may be able to get a snowplow out sometimes, but the road into Echo Lake is only one lane!
Best to plan on packing it in on a sled or everyone carry some.
The Berkeley ski lodge might have lobbied for this one too.
There may be some non permit parking on the south side of HW50.
One of 19 sno parks in Calif. with 29 trailheads. Permits are $25 for the season; $5 daily. Safety classes are offered at some for snowmobiling. Some are open to dog sledding. Permits are also valid in Oregon and Washington!
