Be aware that this one is on the west side of I-96, and the ever-mutating nature of the roads around the Ambassador Bridge to Canada can make getting to 23rd and Bagley into a field trip. Gone are the days of exiting at Porter Street: Take Vernor Highway, regardless of whether you're coming from the north or the south.
Yes, folks, there is authentic Mexican food in the Detroit area, and Mexican Town has plenty of restaurants to visit. El Zócalo opened in 1983, and has been serving up terrific food ever since. Their interior theme is heavy on the Pre-Columbian, and with the exception of hamburguesas and a few other nods to us gringos (chimichangas and burritos), they're heavy on on the real deal. There's menudo, caldo de res, guisados, tacos, tamales, flautas, quesadillas, enchiladas, steaks, and tostadas, plus the tried-and-true breakfast dishes like migas, huevos rancheros, and Mexican-themed omelets. While QDV recommends chicken and cheese enchiladas, their nopalitos (cactus) with eggs is out of this world. They've got a full bar, they're child-friendly, and atmosphere is very casual. The full menu is online here. (

Beware of the appetizers, as they can be huge enough that they'll cover a party of four, and you'll ruin your dinner. It's hard to go wrong with the botanas or the super nachos. If you still have room after all that food, their desserts will take you the rest of the way. The flan is their standard, but also beware of the rum or pineapple cheesecakes. Nap time!
