The town of
Carstairs was incorporated in 1903 while the cemetery came into being slightly earlier, in 1901. There are now over 1,100 interments in the cemetery.
Recent upgrades to the cemetery have included a steel gateway arch at the entrance, flower beds and this columbarium just inside the entrance.
We found this an interesting arch - a type we've not seen before. The arch itself connects a pair of columbariums standing on a concrete pad. With granite faces, the columbariums have hardwood bases and capitals, with the connecting arch rising out of the centre. The arch itself consists of a pair of black powder coated steel tubes with steel floral embellishments between. This is a really well designed columbarium. The IODE, the Carstairs Elks Club, the Lions Club, and KW welding all provided aid in the creation of the columbarium.
