A large log of Mississippi petrified wood is on display outside of the Old Courthouse Museum in downtown Vicksburg MS.

This tree was part of what is now known as the Mississippi Petrified Forest, formed when an ancient river flooded and knocked down a HUGE number of trees. The trees formed a log jam, and, over time, sank into the river and were buried by silt and debris, where they became petrified.

You can see other remnants of this forest at the Mississippi Petrified Forest park in nearby Flora MS. From their website: (visit link)

"Take an unforgettable journey back in time...36 million years to an ancient log jam deposited by a river from halfway across our young continent. The Mississippi Petrified Forest is a place of beauty and fascination."
