This plaque, dedicated to the members of the North West Mounted Police who served from 1873 to 1904, during the settlement of the Canadian West, is mounted on one of the stone pillars supporting the large entrance arch of this cemetery. Many of these selfsame police lie in this cemetery, a great of which were killed while on duty.
The North West Mounted Police Cemetery in Battleford dates back to the early days of the Canadian westward expansion. Located several kms. from the old Fort Battleford, the cemetery is located on a prairie ridge overlooking the North Saskatchewan River.
There are less than 25 grave sites, all members of the force.
The cemetery features a second large memorial flanked by about a dozen headstones. The memorial was placed “In memory of North West Mounted Police Members who lie in unmarked graves.”
