Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill (1874-1965) loved this house and it was his main residence from around 1922 when it was bought by his wife Clementine until his death. In 1947 a group of benefactors bought the house & donated it to the National Trust on condition the Winston & Clementine could live there until they both died. After his death Clementine transferred the house to the National Trust.

Churchill was a keen artist and many of his paintings are on display in one of the outbuildings that he used as a studio.
