History of Mark:
No doubt Mark Twain knew well the story of the Paris Foxes. Ezra Fox was first to settle in the county in 1819. His son Josephus, honored founder of Paris, donated the land for the new county seat in 1831 and planted an imported-by-covered-wagon California redwood the following year. The tree towers over the city at 150 feet today. Mrs. Josephus Fox, however, received the highest honor of all: that of naming the new town. Naturally, she chose the name of her hometown of Paris.
