"The Swiss Fountain by Roman Signer
The Swiss Fountain, a gift from the Association of Swiss Citizens in Liechtenstein, is not a fountain in the traditional sense. Instead, it is a sculpted installation based on the theme of water.
In his work, Signer transfers the perception of the water from the visible to the audible, reducing the experience to the level of the individual. A reference to the local situation is also indicated in the opening of the steel walls in the centre.
Roman Signer, 1938, Appenzell, Switzerland
Following a preliminary course at the Zurich School of Commercial Arts in 1967, Signer attended the Lucerne School of Commercial Arts from 1969 to 1971. He has worked as a freelance artist since 1972, living and working in St. Gallen since 1977. Signer's primary focus is in the area of action and performance. Signer's 'action sculptures' consist of the construction and execution of experiments. Their execution is meticulously planned and documented, usually leading to explosions, collisions and the trajectory of the objects through the respective space. Signer presents the correlation of cause and effect as an artistic version of a scientific experiment.
