Located on a grassy strip in front of Ferguson Elementary School is a small, concrete monument and plaque that reads:
Dedicated to Dan and Thelma Johnson 2011 |
There is an indent in the grass nearby this memorial and I suspect this might have been a tree, plant or shrub dedication but the tree/plant/shrub died and was removed. For now, this memorial is a citizen memorial. I did a little online research for this couple and was able to locate an obituary on Find A Grave here for Dan Johnson. He passed away on Oct. 20, 2010 at the age of 86. I also located a disturbing article about Dan and Thelma's daughter Dawne (pronounced like 'Donnie') who was murdered by her husband in 1991. Their grandson, Zeke, suffered major emotional trauma for years afterward because of his mother's death. The article describing the domestic violence at the hands of Zeke's father can be read about here and was interpreted by Thelma Johnson.
I can only assume that Thelma was possibly an employee of Ferguson or Ezekiel (Zeke) was a student here and dedicated this memorial to his grandparents. Either way, it was a sobering discovery to find out the details of this couple.
