On Saturday, September 13- 2014 Consul John Wilcock attended a ceremony at Stichting CRASH ’40-‘45 in Aalsmeer to unveil the relocated Missing Man Salute Monument, in honor of U.S. flight crews that lost their lives over the Netherlands during World War II.

The monument was created in honor of the crew of the B-24 Liberator “Connie.” Connie flew several missions until the morning of June 21, 1944 when, only 25 minutes away from its base in England, it was shot down by German flak and crashed in the northern part of the Haarlemmermeer polder.

The Missing Man Salute Monument was designed by Leendert Verboom and unveiled at the Airforce Museum at Soesterberg in 2004. Funding for the monument was provided by The Netherlands-United States of America Foundation, which raised funds following the discovery of the remains of Connie in 1997. When the construction of a new museum necessitated the relocation of the memorial from Soesterberg, efforts were made by CRASH ’40-’45 to bring the monument to Aalsmeer, close to the site where Connie was shot down.
