According to Wikipedia, "Jewel Cave National Monument contains Jewel Cave, currently the third longest cave in the world, with just over 166 miles (267 kilometers) of mapped passageways. It is located approximately 13 mi (21 km) west of the town of Custer in South Dakota's Black Hills. It became a national monument in 1908".
The cave was named for its calcite crystals that illuminate the underground, lighted walkways of the cave.

"Custer is a city in Custer County (South Dakota)USA. The population was 2,067 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Custer County. The city is generally considered to be the oldest town established by European Americans in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. Gold was found there during the 1874 Black Hills Expedition, conducted by the 7th Cavalry led by Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer, a discovery which initiated the Black Hills Gold Rush".
